Welcome!
The Research Rave Syndicate is a membership-based collective founded by quilt historians Lisa Erlandson and Tara Miller, designed to teach you how to research quilts — from the very first question to the breakthrough discovery.
You don't need to bring a quilt. You don't need any prior research experience. Whether you have a quilt at home that's been puzzling you for years, you've spotted one at a local museum or historical society, or you've never thought about researching a quilt at all — you're in the right place. If you don't have a quilt in mind, we'll provide one for you to start with.
What you'll leave with is a method: a repeatable, hands-on approach to uncovering the story of a quilt and the people who made it, using accessible tools like census records, newspapers, maps, and more. You just need your curiosity.
Meet Your Guides: Lisa Erlandson & Tara Miller
Lisa and Tara are quilt and textile historians with a combined 30 years of experience researching, interpreting, and sharing the stories behind quilts and their makers. Both are active members of the quilt history community and have served together on the board of the American Quilt Study Group, as well as on several of its key committees.
Their work is grounded in curiosity, care, and a deep respect for the people — especially women — whose lives are stitched into the fabric of history. They believe quilt research isn't just about gathering facts; it's about honoring makers, preserving stories, and building community.
Whether you're brand new to research or already knee-deep in quilt mysteries, Lisa and Tara will meet you where you are.
Joining the Syndicate
When you register for the Research Rave, you're not just signing up for a workshop — you're joining a community.
All participants in our Denver event become members of the Research Rave Syndicate, a growing network of quilt and textile enthusiasts passionate about uncovering the stories behind the quilts we love. As a member, you'll receive access to a private, members-only email group where you can connect with us and with your fellow Syndicate members. Ask questions. Share tips. Post photos of your quilts. Celebrate breakthroughs.
Your Membership Also Includes
- A live Zoom orientation before the event, where you'll meet other participants, hear more about what to expect, and start thinking about your research goals.
- Ongoing support after the in-person gathering, with virtual follow-up sessions where you can share your progress, talk through challenges, and continue growing your research skills within a supportive circle of learners.
